If my records are correct, I have now taught over 1,000 different students in just three years. However, these students have taught me 1,000 different things too and that is every student comes from somewhere and every student wants to become someone and something. For the past three years, I have had the privilege of teaching Philosophy, Ethics, Logic, Philosophy of Religion and Bioethics (Medical Law and Ethics) to these thousand-plus students who come from different walks in life, different cultures, different races, different religions and different economic backgrounds and they all are trying to become the “something” they want to be. We should seek to understand where our students come from and the obstacles they have had to encounter along their journey and we should seek to help them become the “something” they are trying to be.
As an Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy or as I like to think of myself a “Philosophical-Tour Guide,” it is my firm pedagogical belief that it is also our ethical, moral and philosophical task to help our student’s become the best “someone” they can be too. I believe every student inherently wants to become the best person they can be, however, sometimes they aren’t quite sure how to get there. This is why I like to think of myself as a “Philosophical-Tour Guide,” who can expose them to philosophers, ancient texts, powerful ideas, and hard questions that will help them understand the “somewhere” they are from and the “someplace” they want to be; discover and become the “something” they are wanting and trying to be; and contemplating and committing to becoming the best “someone” they can be. ... learning for their lifetimes, to be responsible citizens of the world, to choose a career that they deeply love, and to continue the legacy of inspiring and impacting others in a contagious manner. It is important that my students see my dedication to their well‐being as people, not just as students. I want them to care for people with compassion, to respect all people, and to effect positive change in the world.
My teaching philosophy has evolved over the years and would not be what it is today without the creative freedom that Ivy Tech Warsaw has entrusted me. I am grateful for all of the constructive criticism and praise that students have offered and for the support from my colleagues. Fellow faculty and students have been my great teachers as I am still a student, still a learner. I absolutely love my job. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.
